Mules on a mountain

In a remote area of Turkey, far to the east of Ankara, where armed Kurdish separatists fight with the Turkish army, usually over religious beliefs, the army’s focus has shifted to smuggling matters and this is very bad for mules. A few weeks ago, 25 unaccompanied mules were gunned down near the remote village of Uludere. As it turns out, villagers are primarily smuggling cigarettes and fuel and most do not see anything wrong with the practice- they say it is a matter of survival- It’s a question of “trade”, they claim. A reporter from the BBC trekked to these remote regions and compiled this excellent report referenced in the link above.
