The head of the Philippine Catholic Church joined a litany of organizations and citizens around the country to criticize President Rodrigo Duterte’s unabated and lethal attack on “suspected” drug dealers throughout the Philippines. Manila Cardinal Luis Tagle condemned “those who kill even the helpless.”
Police say that Duterte has had over 3,500 people killed since he launched his politically-motivated attack on these unsuspecting citizens. Several rights groups place the number killed to be much higher, and that many of those targeted are innocent Those killed by Duterte’s henchmen include teenagers.
“The Church initially veered away from criticism of President Duterte’s campaign, but last year began calling for an end to the violence.
In response, the President lambasted senior Church officials. He has not officially responded to the Cardinal’s plea on Sunday,” according to the BBC. The strong reaction came after a 17-year-old boy was killed.
