Eight people were killed when the church van they were riding in blew through a stop sign and ended up in a canal near Lake Okeechobee in Glades County, Florida.
18 people were in the van at the time of the accident that occurred early this morning- one of the passengers, a 4-year-old girl, was in stable condition, and along with 7 other passengers, had been taken to a hospital in Fort Meyers for observation and treatment.
According to local authorities, the group had attended a retreat over the week-end in Fort Meyers. After driving through the intersection, the vehicle descended down a steep embankment into the canal.
The driver and 7 of the passengers were confirmed dead. One of the passengers, told ABC NEWS the driver had failed to see a curve in the road and couldn’t stop in time. Lt. Gregory S. Bueno of the Florida State Patrol, said the vehicle kind of did a nosedive down the embankment.
