An annual report from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), says that Israel’s activities have resulted in the civilian deaths of 2,314 Palestinians and 17,125 injuries last year, compared with 39 deaths and 3,964 injuries in 2013. The numbers were spiked mainly from the conflict in Gaza in July and August of last year between Israel and Hamas where 844 Palestians were killed as a result of airstrikes on Gaza homes. Civilians are required to be protected under the rules of war unless they are being used for military purposes. The Associated press piece linked to above, says they examined 247 airstrikes and found that 508 of the dead, just over 60%, were children, women and older men- all presumed to be civilians. Other findings in the report included: Children younger than 16 made up 1/3rd of the total, including babies and preschoolers between the ages of 1 and 5; in 83 of the airstrikes, three or more members of one family died; and only around 11% of the total killed were confirmed or suspected militants.
