President-elect Joe Biden‘s son Hunter Biden said that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware is investigating his tax affairs on Wednesday. It is not immediately apparent whether the criminal investigation concerns matters that spring from President Trump’s allegations that Joe Biden was aware of Hunter’s dealings with foreign entities, including the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
For his part, Hunter Biden said, “I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors.” He said he learned of the investigation on Tuesday when prosecutors informed his lawyer of the probe.
The transition team for President-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday released a statement saying Biden “is deeply proud of his son, who has fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger.”
According to two people briefed on the probe, CNN reported that investigators have been examining multiple financial issues, including whether Hunter Biden and his associates violated tax and money laundering laws in foreign countries’ business dealings, principally China.
The investigation began as early as 2018, predating the arrival of William Barr as attorney general, two people briefed on the investigation told CNN, the Duluth News Tribune reported.
During the campaign, Trump and Republicans questioned potential conflicts of interest from Hunter Biden’s position on the Ukrainian energy company Burisma when his father was vice president to Democratic President Barack Obama. Other alleged deals with China Have been questioned.
On numerous occasions, Joe Biden has stated that he does not know anything about Hunter’s involvement with foreign entities. However, Tony Bobulinski, a former business partner with Hunter, says otherwise.
Bobulinski appeared on Fox News with Tucker Carlson and blew the whistle on the Bidens. Bobulinski, while providing significant details, categorically states that Joe Bidden and his sons met him to discuss details about a foreign investment scheme. A snippet of the interview is as follows:
[BOBULINSKI] “So, I initially was sitting — because I got there a little earlier, was sitting with Jim Biden and Hunter Biden, and Joe came through the lobby with his security and Hunter basically said, hey, give me a second, I’ll go over and — give me 10 minutes to brief my dad and read him in on things.
And so then Hunter and his father and security came through the bar, and obviously, I stood up out of respect to shake his hand. Hunter introduced me as; this is Tony, Dad, the individual I told you about that’s helping us with the business that we’re working on and the Chinese.”
Peter Doocy reports that the Biden transition team has of today not explicitly commented on the probe.
In a related matter, Republicans are concerned over the possibility of Biden appointing a different U.S. Attorney to take over the review when he assumes office. There is also the issue of Bidden pardoning his son and quashing the investigation altogether.
The investigation could shed light on Joe Biden’s claim that he did not know about Hunter’s foreign business dealings.
