JUDGES LOSE JOBS FOR WATCHING PORN

Three judges were fired for watching pornographic material while on the job in London- a fourth judge retired before he could be sacked. District Judge Timothy Bowles, Immigration Judge Warren Grant and Deputy District Judge and Recorder have been removed from office. The fourth judge, Andrew Maw retired quickly. The pornography was not illegal in content. The judges “served” in London, North Shields, and Lincoln. The Judicial Conduct Investigations Office found they had exhibited “wholly unacceptable conduct”. Since some of the judges may have presided over cases involving pornography or criminal sexual conduct cases, some disturbing questions are being posed to the judiciary officials. Some journalists are concerned about a cover-up in what may be a “fox guarding the hen house” scenario,

COMMENT: Since the materials the judges were watching did not contain illegal content, who cares. Regarding the judges who are now sitting in judgment over their own fellow judges, let the ones who have not done anything inappropriate during their jobs, cast the first stone. What a petty waste of time and public expense. Would carrying on a conversation with your lover, while on duty, call for dismissal? What about having a drink on the job? The list could go on- the point is, judges should be evaluated on the basis of their merit- are they honest, fair and decent men or women. Can they put their biases aside and render just decisions even when they are permitted great latitude and discretion on so many issues on a regular basis? Also, if the basis to remove the judges rested on their use of public equipment (personal computer account), perhaps all judges should disclose the content of ALL of their emails to make sure that none of them pertained to private matters. We are not opposed to removing dishonest or racial judges from the bench but this seems like overkill.
