MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER TWO YEARS AFTER HIKERS FIND A SEVERED HEAD AND OTHER BODY PARTS – ACCUSED CANNIBAL KILLER HEADING FOR TRIAL IN CANADA
See UPDATE below.
A thirty-eight- year old man was arrested in San Antonio, Texas and charged with murder in Los Angeles this week stemming from the discovery of the victim’s severed head, hands and feet in a canyon near Hollywood, California. The remains were found wrapped in a plastic bag buried in a shallow grave by two hikers in 2012. Police reports indicate that the suspect, Gabriel Campos Martinez, had resided with the victim, Hervey Medelin. Police were able to identify Medelin by his fingerprints. Reports indicate the two had been roommates for six months. When the LAPD interviewed Martinez in August of 2012, he provided inconsistent statements and failed a polygraph test.
Police initially considered other suspects including the Mexican Cartel and former adult actor, Luka Magnotta, who is facing trial for murder (dubbed the “Cannibal Killing“) in Montreal, Canada. The cases are now considered to be unrelated. Magnotta is charged with the murder and dismemberment of Lin Jun, a Chinese student living and studying in Montreal. He allegedly murdered Jun in May of 2012 and then sent body parts to the Conservative Party in Ottawa and elementary schools. Magnotta had fled to Germany where he was arrested.
UPDATE: Martinez was convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years to life. He refused to make a statement.
