Authorities in Tanzania have ordered an investigation into a video which appears to show a group of teachers savagely beating a young student at a schoolhouse in Mbeya, located in the southwest part of the country. The beating of the child took place in September, but the video of the incident was just recently released.
The BBC reports that the incident has touched off outrage in the community and many are calling for the teachers to be fired and confronted with criminal prosecution. “Twitter users shared their dismay with the hashtag #ArrestMbeyaSecondaryTeachers” reports say. The headteacher, Margaret Haule, has already been suspended for not taking quick action in the matter.
The dailynews identified the three teachers as Frank Misigwa, John Deo, and Sanke Gwamaka, who were “on-field training at the school.” “Ms. Esther Harembo of Iringa University begged for the teachers to stop beating the student but her call was unheard.”
