The Democrat’s anti-Catholic attack on Amy Coney Barrett During the Confirmation Hearings will Anger the Public
“When Amy Coney Barrett testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee three years ago, Senator Dianne Feinstein, referring to Barrett’s faith, said that “the dogma lives loudly within you.”
Of course, the question was not only constitutionally infirm (religious litmus tests are forbidden), it was a cheap shot.
The Democrat radical Senators will no doubt make similar attacks in the next few weeks—constitution aside. Some will seize on Barrett’s Catholic faith. They will likely try to use her writings dealing with faith and the death penalty to discredit her.
They will argue that when a judge’s beliefs teach against the death penalty, the judge should recuse herself from all cases dealing with the death penalty. They will take it a step further and compare the death penalty analysis to abortion.
However, Judge Barret had already answered this question when she wrote, “Catholic judges must answer some complex moral and legal questions in deciding whether to sit in death penalty cases. Sometimes (as with direct appeals of death sentences), the right answers are not obvious.
But in a system that effectively leaves the decision up to the judge, these are questions that responsible Catholics must consider seriously. Judges cannot-nor should try to align our legal system with the Church’s moral teaching whenever the two diverge. They should, however, conform their own behavior to the Church’s standard. Perhaps their good example will have some effect.”
Because Judge Barret addressed the recusal issue concisely and scholastically, most Democrat Senators will not grasp or understand her words. Hopefully, Feinstein and her intellectually- challenged colleagues will again make fools of themselves—the public will not stand for it.
