A story in the New York Times today said, “Inserting himself into the Republican presidential race, Pope Francis on Wednesday suggested that Donald J. Trump “is not Christian” because of the harshness of his campaign promises to deport more immigrants and force Mexico to pay for a wall along the border. “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said.”
Trump quickly and calmly responded that it was “disgraceful” for the Pope to question directly one’s faith. We agree. Who is going to weigh in on the anti-Trump bandwagon next– the Dalai Lama? We get it; people have their political urges, but you would think the Pope would steer clear of American politics. At any rate, this should not hurt Trump’s political status since most Americans would likely agree that the Pope’s comments were neither accurate or helpful– the words are troublesome, though.
