Tony Robinson, 19, was shot and killed by Madison police after they responded to a call of a disturbance Friday night.

A police officer shot and killed a 19-year-old black man at an apartment complex in Madison, Wisconsin Saturday. The city’s Chief of Police said the man, who was not immediately officially identified, was alleged to have been involved in a recent battery incident according to Chief Mike Koval. Family friends have identified the man as Tony Robinson, a 2014 graduate of Sun Prairie High School. Robinson’s grandmother, Sharon Irwin, told the Wisconsin State Journal that Robinson was unarmed although it was unclear how she knew this. This is the third fatal shooting by Madison police officers since the state adopted a law requiring an “outside agency” investigation concerning such matters in 2014. Although the shooting has touched off some protests, family members of Robinson have purportedly requested that any such protests be peaceful. Additional details of the shooting are expected to be released today.

UPDATE: 5/12/15: Dane County District Attorney, Ismael Ozanne announced that no charges would be brought against the police officer in this case.
