A woman walking her dog this week along the Merrimack River in Lawrence, New York came upon a gruesome discovery. The body of missing 16-year-old Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino was found: The boy’s body had been decapitated, the head found 50 feet away on a portion of the riverbank behind the Lawrence Boys & Girls Club.
Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett identified the suspect arrested in connection with Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino’s death as Mathew Borges, a 16-year-old Lawrence resident. “He will be arraigned at Lawrence District Court on a count of murder of the first degree and will be charged as an adult,” Blodgett said.
Viloria-Paulino was last seen on Nov. 18. The family had been frantically searching for him, posting notices on Facebook and other social media sites. Family members soon became frustrated with the Lawrence police accusing the department of treating the case as a missing person matter; On Saturday, the grandfather of the slain victim, Gustavo Paulino, said: “We disagree with the investigation of the police at the beginning.” – The grandmother, Viloria-Paulinoa added, “Police treated this as a runaway case, even though from day one we told them it was not.”
Social media commentators also criticized the police. A sample of their writings is set forth below.

“I have done work as a Psychic Investigator on many cases in this country and internationally also. What I do not understand is where was the Amber Alert on this child?. He was a young boy 16! Where were the postings on social media State and Federal agencies? He was not a run away and how the heck does that differ from a missing child anyway? It does not…shame on the detectives and people associated with this investigation. They need to reevaluate this whole missing persons task force if they want to truly aid in finding the missing. Now they may have gotten their perp but what does that do, this child is deceased by a horrific act. May I suggest to the parents of this child. Get yourself your own PI and have them represent you in this case, making sure Lawrence does a good job from here on out and a good attorney. My condolences and as a Mother myself, I am so,so sorry.”

“A petition is circulating in the city calling for the resignation of the Lawrence police chief for how they handled this case when he was reported missing by his family. I urge all citizens of Lawrence to sign this petition.”
